SECURE Foundations

Small business. Sensible security.

Small businesses hold data, use technology and face many of the same security risks as much larger organisations. What they don't usually have is a dedicated IT or security team.

Cyber security can sound complicated. For most small businesses, it doesn't need to be.

SECURE Foundations is a free, practical cyber security guide. It explains the basic measures you can put in place to protect your business and reduce the risk from common cyber threats - without needing an IT department or a degree in computer science.

SECURE Foundations helps you:

  • understand the basic security measures every small business should have in place

  • protect your systems, devices and data from common cyber threats

  • know what to do if something does go wrong

  • understand your responsibilities when handling personal data

  • assess your current security and identify where you need to improve

  • find trusted sources of further guidance when you need them

Is SECURE Foundations for you?

SECURE Foundations draws on the principles behind our DATA Health Assessment, but is designed specifically for smaller businesses to use themselves – particularly those with up to 10 employees and no dedicated IT or security team.

That might include freelancers and consultants, small agencies, trades and service businesses, independent retailers and local charities.

It's most useful if your technology is relatively straightforward – for example, you mainly use laptops or desktops and cloud services such as Microsoft 365 or Google Workspace.

Free. Useful. No strings attached.

You don’t need to give us your contact details to download SECURE Foundations. Just take it, use it and make your business more secure.

If you find it useful, we’d always be pleased to hear about it. And please pass it on to others you think could benefit too.
