Enable: Making more possible with data and technology
Part of our series introducing the AIK Advisory Elemental Method, Enable explores how businesses can maximise commercial value from data, technology and AI, including the capabilities they already have.
Every organisation is looking for ways to improve how it operates. Drive efficiency. Serve customers better. Respond faster. Support growth. Stay competitive.
Data, technology and AI promise to help.
Connecting data across systems might provide more reliable management information. Better analysis might help you to understand performance in ways that weren't previously possible.
Improving a process might improve efficiency, release capacity, reduce costs or allow people to focus on more valuable work.
Better use of data might create opportunities to improve customer experience. And new technology, including AI, may open up entirely different ways of operating or competing.
The potential to do more, faster and differently has never been greater. But it's easy to get caught up in what technology can do, without properly considering what the business actually needs.
Start with the business, not the technology
Investment alone doesn’t create value. And too often, organisations invest before they've clearly defined the problem they're trying to solve or the outcome they want to achieve. The attraction of new capabilities takes precedence over understanding whether they're needed, or whether something already in place could do the job.
Technology ends up trying to answer questions the business hasn't yet asked.
That's why the starting point should always be “what are we trying to achieve?”, rather than “what can this tool do?”.
It's a simple distinction, but one that can make an enormous difference to the value a business gets from its technology. Because while technology may make new things possible, it can only create value when it serves clear commercial priorities, delivers reliable information and supports the right ways of working.
When more delivers less
The consequences of losing sight of that purpose can accumulate.
New systems may be introduced without being clear about how they fit with what's already there. Different teams adopt tools that overlap in purpose. Data becomes fragmented, information inconsistent and useful insight increasingly difficult to extract or trust.
And as the technology estate grows, it can become harder to distinguish what each tool is actually supposed to achieve.
Opportunities are missed. Expected benefits fail to materialise. Investment is wasted. Decision confidence falls and value is eroded.
The temptation can be to add more tools or systems. But sometimes the greater opportunity lies in resetting priorities, including whether the business could get more from what it already has.
Unlocking commercial potential
Enable is about identifying where data, technology and information can create the greatest commercial value. Aligning opportunities with business priorities, recognising dependencies and shaping practical delivery so that the potential can be realised.
AIK Advisory brings decades of experience helping organisations turn business ambition into practical capability. We work with leadership teams to understand where opportunities exist, how to get more from existing investments and where new capabilities could make a meaningful difference. Better insight. Greater efficiency. Improved offers. Stronger performance. Competitive advantage and sustainable growth.
And greater confidence that investment in data and technology is creating real commercial value.
