Introducing the AIK Advisory Elemental Method
Whether working with micro businesses or large enterprises, AIK Advisory’s thinking is structured using The AIK Advisory Elemental Method. The four elements that underpin the Method are core to how we approach any engagement.
Not all engagements need the same weight of attention across each of the four elements, but by considering all four, each business and its unique needs and challenges are represented.
Why the Elemental Method matters?
The Elemental Method has been developed through over thirty years of experience working across diverse sectors and business scales. It allows us to bring that broad experience to every business and ensure all our recommendations are rounded and proportionate, and that they will work in practice. More importantly, it means we avoid one-dimensional thinking that risks creating a problem elsewhere.
Protect
Governance requirements come from many corners. The more we use technology, store data and analyse it to create information, the more we need to demonstrate good governance. And with AI both high on everyone’s agenda and fraught with new risks, the need for that protection has never been greater or more complex.
Whether you need to demonstrate it to win a tender, your business is highly-regulated because of your sector, or simply the basic needs of the law, such as GDPR, apply, most businesses need to take it seriously – often more seriously than they realise or are able.
Most leaders know that with increased responsibility, both because of technological advances and their own business growth, they need to demonstrate responsible stewardship. But while this is a primary need for a business, it is also highly specialist. And it’s all too easy for governance to end up at extremes, from unnecessarily overbearing to dangerously lacking.
AIK Advisory’s long history of working in highly-regulated environments, such as banking, legal and defence, coupled with direct experience of the responsibilities of a Data Protection Officer and senior business leader in non-regulated sectors, is baked into the Method. The understanding of not just the need to protect the business and its customers, but what that means in practice. What it means to be proportionate. To protect meaningfully, but without stifling. To protect in service of creating opportunities.
Enable
It is this commercial judgement that is at the heart of Enable. And where we step beyond governance. Because technology, data and information should be great enablers of business, from driving efficiency to unlocking competitiveness.
But they always need a purpose, and the purpose can sometimes become lost in the excitement of new possibilities or the complexity of growth. Which can result in missed opportunities or failure to realise intended benefits. Add AI into the mix, and things get both more urgent and more unclear.
Enable is about recognising where data, technology and information can create commercial opportunities, then aligning those possibilities with business priorities, existing capabilities and practical delivery to realise their value.
Navigate
But even with aligned priorities, there can still be a bewildering array of choices to make. And pressure to make them. The pace of technological change, particularly around AI, and the perceived pressure to keep up can make good commercial judgement more difficult.
As businesses grow, complexity compounds. Systems evolve, processes multiply and competing priorities emerge. A series of isolated choices can result in tangled technology, disconnected data and duplicated effort. Adding more on top can exacerbate rather than resolve the problem, with valuable investment going astray.
Navigate is about understanding an organisation's commercial priorities and technical reality, balancing competing demands and making the right trade-offs with confidence. So that technology investments work hard without adding unnecessary complexity
Embed
Embed is no less important than the elements. Indeed, without it, even the smartest choice choices can still fail to deliver their intended value. It is where transformation stalls, AI disappoints or governance becomes performative.
It is vital that technology, data and information become part of the fabric of an organisation through its policies, processes and people. It is impossible to deliver a technology project or programme successfully without consideration for what it means to ways of working. Which makes it a conversation about emotions and empathy as much as it is about systems and processes, ensuring strategy becomes everyday practice.
Why the four elements work together
The four elements are interconnected. What works for one business may be entirely inappropriate for another. And what works today may need to evolve tomorrow.
The AIK Advisory Elemental Method brings commercial judgement to technical complexity, helping businesses balance competing priorities and find an approach that’s right for them. It’s how we Discover Simplicity.
